Corby Business Academy has once again posted record GCSE results.

Provisional figures indicate that the percentage of students achieving 5 A* to C grades, including English and Mathematics, has risen to 61% - a rise of 23% over two years.

The percentage of students achieving the highest grades has also increased with the number achieving at least 1 A* to A grades increasing to 57%. Stand out subjects include English, Physics, Chemistry, BTEC and GCSE Business, Sport and Music.

The number of students who achieved A* to C in the EBacc subjects has also increased with English, Mathematics, Science, Languages and Humanities all posting improved results when compared with previous years.

Principal John Henrys said: "Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard and I would like to congratulate them all. They have worked well together and the students have shown great commitment to their courses and have been very successful as a result.

"Over the past 18 months staff had to respond to a significant number of changes with regard to external qualifications and have faced a lot of pressure to develop new courses which give our students the best possible opportunities in the current educational climate.

"I am particularly pleased with the outcomes in English where the new courses which have been developed over the past 12 months have proved to be very successful. In fact English has exceeded last year's national average for levels of progress.

"These GCSE results will allow a significant number of our students to go on to access A-Level studies at the Academy and we look forward to working with them in the Sixth Form."

Alex Lawless achieved five A*s in History, Ethics, English Literature, English Language and Maths, a Distinction* in Health and Social Care, four As in Business, French, Biology and Chemistry a B in Physics and a Merit in Dance.

She said: Doing the exams was okay but afterwards I got scared that I might have done something wrong so I’m so very happy and relieved today.

“I’m really looking forward to studying History, English Literature, Maths and a fourth subject at CBA next year.”

Harry Tomkins earned A*s in Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Art and Design, Maths and English Literature, As in Business, Biology, English Language, Music and Religious Studies and a B in Spanish.

He said: “I’m over the moon and I’m incredibly happy with my results for Spanish and Geography.”

Harry will stay on at CBA to study Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Geography for his A-Levels.

Roisin Curran received an A* in Maths, a Distinction* in Health and Social Care, a Distinction* in Sport, Bs in Business, English Literature, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Religious Studies and History and Cs in French and Physics.

She said: “It is such a relief to have my results and I feel so happy. I’m going to study Maths, Further Maths, English Literature and Business at CBA next year.”

Beth Fennell received an A* in Chemistry, six As in History, Maths, Biology, IT, English Literature and English Language, Bs in Physics and French and Cs in PE and Business.

She said: “I’m so happy. I’ve done much better than I thought I would. It makes all the hard work and the stress worthwhile.”

Beth will study Maths, Further Maths, Psychology and PE in the Academy’s Sixth Form.

Emily Laughton-Hulatt earned a Distinction* in Health and Social Care, an A* in English Literature, five As in English Language, Chemistry, Physics, IT and Maths, Bs in Biology, Geography and French and a C in Ethics.

She said: “I worked so hard for my exams – at the time it seemed never-ending. I’m so happy to have done so well.”

Emily wants to study Psychology, Sociology, Maths, Philosophy and Ethics at A-Level.

April Atkin achieved five As in Maths, IT, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, four Bs in Business, Media, Physics and Ethics and a C in Statistics.

She said: “I was really nervous beforehand and I’m overwhelmed that I have done so well.

“I will go on to study biology, media and English at the Sixth Form here.”

Polly Jones received a Distinction* in Performing Arts, As in History, English Literature, English Language and Art and Design and Bs in Business, French, Religious Studies and two Sciences.

She said: “I was terrified beforehand. I burst into tears before I got my results and I’ve been crying since but now they’re tears of happiness.”

Polly will study English literature, history, biology and performing arts at CBA’s sixth form.

Rachel Sheen earned an A* in English literature, As in English language, history and two sciences, a Distinction in Btec art and design and Bs in business, French and ethics.

She said: “I didn’t expect to do this well and I’m thrilled with my A* in English literature. I’m also very happy because I got 100 per cent in one of my history papers.”

Rachel will study English Literature, Business, Psychology and Biology at CBA next year.

Matthew Hanna received an A* in English Literature and Maths, an A in Business, Bs in History, Media, English Language and the three Sciences and Cs in French, Religious Studies and Geography.

He said: “I’m particularly happy with my A* in English Literature because I wasn’t expecting that. I’m going to study A-Levels in Maths, Business, Media and Creative Writing.”

Taila Miller earned As in Spanish, English Literature, English Language, ICT, Science and Maths, Bs in Hospitality, Science and History and Cs in Ethics and Catering.

Taila, who also spent part of her final year organising the Academy’s Year 11 prom, said: “It’s great that my hard work has paid off. I’m now looking forward to studying Maths, Business, Spanish, Law and English Language for my A-Levels.”

Twins George and Megan Tebbutt (CORR) were thrilled with their results.

George received a Distinction* in Business, an A* in Art, As in Science and IT and Bs in English, Geography and Maths.

He said: “I put in a lot of hard work and I’m very happy that it’s paid off. I’m going to stay here and study Geography, Chemistry, Maths and Vocational Business.”

Megan earned four As in Maths, Geography, and two Sciences, Bs in English Literature and IT and Cs in English Language and Statistics.

She said: “I never expected to do this well and I feel very excited. I’m going to study Business, Maths, IT and Geography in the Sixth Form.”

Jordan Abnett’s best results included a Distinction in Business BTEC, As in Maths and Chemistry, Bs in English Literature, Physics and IT and Cs in English Language, Biology, Geography and Art.

He said: “I feel relieved to have my results.  I’m very happy with my result for English Literature because I find that more difficult than Maths or Science.”

Jordan will study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at CBA’s Sixth Form.

Chloe Smith received a Distinction* in Public Service, a Distinction* in Health and Social Care, an A* in English Literature, an A in English Language and Bs in Business, French, Religious Studies and Science and Maths.

She said: “I never expected to so well. I’m looking forward to studying French, Psychology and BTEC Business and BTEC Health and Social Care at CBA next year.”

Amy Moore’s results included As in English Literature and English Language, Bs in Business, History, Maths and the three Sciences and a C in French.

She said: “I’m thrilled with my English results. When I was at primary school I was told I would never do very well at English so I’m very happy to have got two As.

“I’m going to study English, Physics, Dance and either history or French for my A-Levels at CBA.”

Shannon Davidson earned a Distinction* in Public Service, Bs in Physics, Media, History, Religious Studies, Ethics, English Literature and English Language and Cs in Biology, Maths and Chemistry.

She said: “I was nervous beforehand but I feel great now. I’m delighted with my B in Media.”

Shannon wants to go on to study Media, Sociology, Psychology and Photography.

Ryan Hutchison earned an A in Maths, Bs in two Sciences, Religious Studies, English Literature, History and IT and a C in Media.

He said: “I worked very hard over the past two years and I’m very happy with my results. I will now be able to go on to study Accounting.”

Bethany McLean received Distinctions in Business and Health and Social Care, an A in Art and Bs in Geography, ICT, English Literature, English Language and Religious Studies.

She said: “I feel great and I’m particularly happy with my Geography result.  My next step is to study for a diploma in Animal Management.”

Georgina Reay’s top grades included a Distinction* in Health and Social Care, As in History and IT, Bs in Science, English Literature and English Language and a C in Business.

She said: “I’m over the moon with my results. I’m particularly pleased with my result for Science because I find it a challenging subject.”

Georgina will study Maths, Psychology, Health and Social Care and IT at CBA next year.

Beth McQuillan also picked up a number of top grades, includings As in English Literature and Music, Bs in Chemistry, English Language and Religious Studies and Cs in Biology, Physics, History and Art.

She said: “I worked really hard and it feels great to have done this well.”

Beth will stay at Corby Business Academy and intends to study Music, Art, Psychology, and Maths at A-Level.

Heather Phillips received an A in English Literature, Bs in Business, History, PE, English Language and Science and a C in Cooking.

She said: “I was nervous before I got my results but I’m delighted now.

“I’m particularly happy with my A in English Literature.”

Heather will stay at CBA next year and study Business, Maths, Psychology and Sport.

Samuel Thompson’s results included a Distinction* in Business, Bs in the three Sciences, and English Language and a Pass in BTEC Art and Design.

He said: “I’m relieved and happy.  I’d like to thank my English teachers for their support because I don’t think I would have done so well without their help.”

Samuel wants to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at CBA’s sixth form.

Tegan Hill’s results included a B in English Literature, Cs in Science, Ethics, Maths, English Language, Statistics, ICT, and two Passes in Business and Health and Social Care and will enable her to go on to study Childcare.

She said: “I didn’t think I had done so well and I’m very pleased with my results for English.”

Chelsea Long results included a Merit in Public Service, Cs in English Literature, English Language and two Sciences and a Pass in Health and Social Care.

She said: “I’m really happy with my results for English and Science. My results mean I will be able to go on to study Childcare.”

Molly Owens, who was particularly pleased with her A in English Literature, said: “I heard on the news this morning that the English results weren’t good so I’m thrilled to have done so well.”
