Drama helps students to learn about relationships

Our students have taken part in a new educational project about relationships.

Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commission has joined forces with the charity Service Six and The Core Theatre for a project examining young people’s relationships with one another.

A group of performers put on a drama about the beginnings of a relationship between two young people for our Year 8 students and the performance was followed by educational workshops.

CBA Teacher Karen Owen said: “The theme was about intimate relationships and how relationships can change.

“It was a hard-hitting drama but our students dealt with it in a very mature manner and were a credit to themselves and the Academy.

“The students were great during the question and answer sessions and we did workshops with Service Six which made the students think about the range of different relationships they have and how they make them feel.

“The project helped to raise their awareness about what constitutes a healthy relationship.

“A huge thank you goes to our staff from the Mathematics Department who helped to deliver the workshops.”

Nationally young people under 18 are recognised as being at risk of, or experiencing, abuse within their relationships.

In a large-scale consultation, carried out by Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds, young people revealed they were facing issues within intimate relationships between each other at an increasingly younger age.

The educational drama and workshops will tour about 20 county secondary schools.
