There was a drama aplenty for students Josh Farr, Thomas Jeffery and Daniel Gair, who had to help out with on the spot repairs when the Mark IV Golf GTI they have been working on as part of their studies, needed a new clutch after going out for a test before the big race.

The event was the Volkswagon Racing Cup, which attracts competitors from around the country.

The trio went along with Lunar Racing, a motorsport team based at our neighbour Rockingham Motor Speedway.

The racing team specialises in education, working with students aged from 14-18 to build and maintain real racing cars that compete against professional racing teams in professional championships

Thomas Jeffery, who intends on becoming a World Rally Series mechanic, said: "It was just an amazing experience.

"We were able to go into the garages and have a look at the real world of motorsport.

"It has confirmed even more that I want to work as a mechanic."

Josh Farr, who had the duty of holding the pit board, said: "It was a great day. The car had a few teething problems, but we were just testing it ahead of next year's race series."

The three students are all studying their Institute of Motoring Industry (IMI) Level 2 with Lunar Racing.

The two year course contains both theoretical study and practical study.
