Two Year 7 students have excelled under the Accelerated Reader programme during their first term, taking around 70 quizzes between them.

Since starting at CBA in September, Kelly Hume and James Butlin have been regular library users and have shown a lot of enthusiasm for the Accelerated Reader programme.

Accelerated Reader is a programme that encourages students to read books and assesses their understanding of them through online quizzes.

Students are given a book to read - appropriate to their individual level - and then complete an online quiz about what they have read.

Students receive certificates and prizes based on the number of quizzes they pass and the number of quizzes in which which they get 100% of the answers correct.

Librarian Amy McKay said: “Every time James and Kelly come in to get a book and do a quiz, they are taking more books home with them.

“In about five weeks Kelly’s reading age has increased by 18 months through her sheer determination.

“They have both just been working so hard.”

This term the library has also been running a scheme where students receive a scratchcard for each Accelerated Reader quiz they complete with 100% correct answers. The scratchcards have been very popular and the number of quizzes taken has increased.

Miss McKay said: "It's encouraging students to take quizzes but also to try that bit harder because the number of quizzes passed has increased."

This term 1,295 Accelerated Reader quizzes have been taken by CBA students - 1,049 of these quizzes were passed.
