Readers are welcomed to Millionaires' Club at special party

About 70 of our students were welcomed to our first Accelerated Readers Millionaires’ Club at a special celebration.

To enter the club students were challenged to read about a million words and then take Accelerated Readers quizzes on the books they had chosen.

All the members were treated to a special event in our Library on Friday which included a variety of refreshments, the chance to watch a film and games.

Librarian Amy McKay said: “When we started the club we thought we might get 30 members so to get more than double that is fantastic.

“Our Millionaires’ Club is different to most other Millionaires' Clubs because it is based on individuals’ reading levels.

“So for example students who struggle with reading were challenged to read 600,000 words in order to become a millionaire in Canada where $1m is worth nearly £600,000.

“At the same time our very strong readers were asked to read 1.8m words in order to become millionaires in Bahrain.

“As a result we had a good mix of readers entering the competition.

“The celebration was a lovely occasion and was a great way to celebrate the students’ achievements and all their hard work.

“They all did so incredibly well and they were so determined to get in the club. One of our strongest readers read a million words in the fortnight before the celebration to make sure he got in.

“It’s wonderful to see the students being so inspired to read.”

One of the members of the club is Year 8 student Jasmine Sawyer. She was challenged to read 600,000 words to enter the club but by the end she had read 1.1m words.

She said: “I never used to read but I thought I would give this a shot.

“Amy and our Assistant Librarian Christina Mangin were really nice and helped me pick out books.

“I’ve been reading as many books as I can. I like reading a lot more now and it has helped me improve my speech.”
