Exciting day of activities will challenge students

Students could learn how to solve crime or try their hand at making fashion from trash during a special day of activities this week.

On Thursday, the Academy will host Curriculum Day which will give students the opportunity to step away from their normal lessons for a few hours so they can try out new activities and learn new skills.

There will be five activities on offer during the event: Forensic Detection, Krypton Factor, Europe During World War II, Street TRASHion and Film and Communication.

Assistant Principal Jenny Tomlin said: “Our students will come off their timetable and take part in different activities which will help them to be more creative and develop skills in communication, problem-solving and teamwork, which are all so important in business.

“They will be working in mixed year groups across a range of different faculties.

“It will give them more experience of working with different groups of students and trying new things.”

The Forensic Detection initiative is designed for students who are interested in learning the skills needed to solve crime. The topics they will study will include DNA profiling, fingerprinting and the examination of handwriting.

The Krypton Factor session will challenge students to solve a range of problems, test their memory skills, design and make a water clock, build a boat that floats and participate in outdoors team building tasks.

The Europe During World War II project will give students the opportunity to make a bouncing bomb and learn about rationing, the dance crazes from the period, propaganda and wartime artwork.

Street TRASHion is for budding fashionistas and eco warriors who will design, create and market their own fashion from rubbish such as scraps of fabric and paper.

Film and Communication is for students who fancy themselves as filmmakers, animators, music score composers or actors and actresses. They will learn how to animate a film, create the music, dance and act.

Another Curriculum Day will be held later in the year.
