E-safety advice for parents

Parents were advised how to protect their children from online problems and cyber bullying during a special session at our Academy.

Parents were advised how to protect their children from online problems and cyber bullying during a special session at our Academy.

We invited Sue Miller, of E-Safeguarding Training, into the Academy to talk to parents about the main online threats and issues faced by young people generally during a session after school earlier this month.

The session covered issues such as unwanted contact or grooming, cyber bullying, the sending of sexually explicit photographs and messages, illegal material, privacy and digital footprints.

Parents were also advised who to contact if they are worried their child is suffering problems online.

Below are tips to help you:

WHAT DO YOUNG PEOPLE DO ON-LINE?

·      Social networking – Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram

·      Instant messaging – Skype, BBM, Whatsapp, Snapchat

·      Blogs and chat sites – Tumblr, Ask FM, Spillit

·      Gaming – Consoles: free and paid

·      Mobile Technology – Applications

WHO CAN HELP WITH PROBLEMS?

·      Online grooming could be sexual chat, a child being asked to do something that makes them feel uncomfortable or someone insisting on meeting up

·      Report suspected online grooming to the police via www.ceop.police.uk

·      Young people and children can also contact Childline for help. It is a 24-hour confidential helpline for children and young people which can be reached on 0800 1111
