Duke of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Dear Parent/Carer

This year we are initiating The Duke of Edinburgh Award in the school.  This is an award scheme that has been running nationally with a great deal of success for many years.  The purpose is help young people to develop the skills and attitudes they need to succeed in life.  These include self motivation, self discipline and commitment as well as recognition for things they already are doing.

They can make a difference to other people’s lives, and make a contribution to their community.  They may even become fitter and healthier although I can’t promise that.

Both industry and further education value the award as it may demonstrate qualities beyond the purely academic grades.  It can make for a balanced CV and enable them to talk with enthusiasm about what they have achieved if they are invited to interview.

The programme for the course is based around 4 sections volunteering, physical, skills and an expedition.  There are hundreds of activities that young people can choose to do.  Further details about these can be found on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award website at www.dofe.org  I can also supply a list of suggested attributes if you choose to register your son/daughter for the award.

We will be starting with the Bronze level award although there are three levels to the award including Silver and Gold.  The Gold award presentation is held at St James’s Palace and is attended by HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH the Earl of Wessex.  There is a participation fee of £14.00 for the Bronze Award.  For this participants receive a booklet outlining the programme and a ‘keeping track’ booklet to record their DofE activities and progress.  There is a Cotswold Discount Card (a national chain of outdoor shops) worth 15% off all their equipment.  For further details see the above website or contact me.  The school has kindly made funds available to cover the remaining administrative charges for this year and next, which is quite substantial.

If you would like your son/daughter to participate in the scheme could you please complete and return the ‘Participant Enrolment Form’ and return it as soon as possible.  Please enclose a non refundable participation fee, cheques payable to Corby Business Academy, or via ‘Wisepay’ if paid by this method please still return slip below.

If you require any further details please do not hesitate to contact me at the Academy by phone or email.
