Geography GCSE - Parental Consent

October 2012

Parental Consent Form

Re: Geography GCSE

Dear Parent/Carer,

As part of the OCRa Geography syllabus that your child/children is completing, students are required to study how different places are represented in a variety of media, (artwork, poetry, magazines, books, brochures, photographs, documentaries and films)

However, some of the clips that highlight crucial aspects of a geographical process or of a different place may be of a higher certification that your child’s/children’s age.  Normally within geography we will show clips that are suitable for your child’s age. Most documentaries are classified as E, exempt from classification.  However, from time to time we may need show clips from other genres, for example Bruce Parry:  Tribe & Amazon, Slum Dog Millionaire, An Idiot Abroad, Border Patrol USA and Bear Grylls.  As some of these shows are of a higher certification than your child’s age group, I am asking for your consent to show your child subject appropriate. It is important to note that only selected clips will be used from the programmes that the teacher feels appropriate for the students. Below you will find a list of the film classifications, more information on these can be found at www.bbfc.co.uk/

Film Classifications:

U             Suitable for audiences aged four years and over.  U films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.

PG           Parental Guidance: general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.

12A        Suitable for 12 years and over, responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

15           Suitable only for 15 years and over.

E              Exempt from classification. Applies to films which are primarily to inform, educate or instruct as opposed to entertain.

Yours faithfully
