Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 students continue to follow a core curriculum with a choice of three optional subjects. All are given the opportunity to undertake GCSEs, BTECs and other non-GCSE Level 2 courses.

There are various routes that students can opt fo at Key Stage 4 depending on their Key Stage 3 outcomes. However, all students will complete a 'core' suite of qualifications comprising GCSE Mathematics, English and Science. One selection is from a Core Option block. If appropriate, some will be guided to select a non-GCSE qualification in IT.

Two further option blocks allow students to select from a broad range of academic and creative subjects.

To build on this in Year 10 and 11, the plan will be to consolidate skills from Year 9 and apply them while teaching the skills for Grade 4-5. Year 11 will build on this again and consolidate all the topics and the application of them in exam questions. There will be flexibility towards the end of this year to focus on a class' weaknesses before the exams are sat. These weaknesses will be apparent from tracking sheets from mock assessments in Year 10 and 11.

Students study BTEC Technical Award in Performing Arts Dance: This course is divided into three Components of work.

Component 1: Allows the students to research into the Performing Arts Industry. They investigate different jobs within the Performing Arts and then compare and contrast how different people within the industry work.

Component 2: Is all about Physical and Interpretive skills in dance. Students as a class opt for the style of dance they wish to study and then take part in technique classes to develop their skills. The students then have to perform a piece of professional dance work in a workshop style setting.

Component 3: Is an externally set task where students are given a theme in which they must choreograph a piece of dance to in small groups. During the process they must write some journal entries about what they are doing.
