National Grid challenges students to build wind turbines

Experts from National Grid worked with our students on a challenging engineering project.

About 60 students from Year 8 and a small group of students from Year 7 were challenged to build a wind turbine from paper triangles and squares as part of the National Grid Wind Turbine Challenge.

At the end of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) project each group of students found out how much electricity their wind turbine could produce.

Teacher Gail King said: “We divided the students into girls’ and boys’ teams.

“The girls’ designs were far more intricate and we thought they were going to win but the boys’ turbine produced the most electricity.

“At the end of the challenge the students had to give a presentation about what they had learned and what improvements they would make if they were to do the challenge again.

“It was a really good day and I was very impressed with the students’ turbines.”
