Academy Senate Given Gold Award

Corby Business Academy has become the first school in Corby to be awarded the Gold Council Award.

Northamptonshire County Council's Participation Worker Glenys Cox revealed the news during a visit to the Academy today.

In just nine months the Academy Senate has passed through the bronze and silver stages and has become one of a select number of outstanding school council's in the county.

Vice Principal Sarah Ashby, who chairs the Senate meetings, said: "This award is testament to the hard work put in by the students.

"This is a spectacular achievement considering that last year was our first year as an Academy.

"The students have a say in every aspect of the Academy, from working with the site department on various matters such as recycling and coming up with ideas for charitable events."

The Academy Senate has become a central feature of Academy life since it was founded in Autumn 2008.

It is made up of representatives from across the year groups; with two students from each year elected by their peers to represent their views and concerns.

Achievements of the Senate in the previous academic year include organising a Comic Relief fundraiser (which raised almost £1,200), devising a uniform donation scheme and delivering Christmas hampers to the elderly within the Corby Community.

The Senate also visited the Mayors Parlour and made suggestions about how transport links to the school could be improved.

After delivering the good news, Glenys Cox said: "I have been impressed by absolutely everything that I have seen here at the Academy. There is a really strong relationship between the student and staff bodies and the students do have a real input into how the Academy runs and is developing."

The Academy Senate has also become a model for other schools and will be emulated by sister school Kettering Science Academy and there are also planned links with Uppingham Community College.

Elections for the new senate will be organised later this term. Watch this space for more information.
