Dramatic Art of Storytelling

An author who could see his first novel turned into a film by the makers of Wallace and Gromit entertained CBA students with a reading of his novel this afternoon (May 13th).

Actor and novelist Leander Deeny had the Year 7 audience roaring with laughter as he read a half hour recital from his novel Hazel's Phantasmagoria.

Oxford educated Leander, who has a part in the new Captain America Film, made the visit as part of a nationwide school tour.

He said: "I really enjoy the performance side of touring my book, as the life of a writer is very lonely.

"I also like to see the reaction of the audience as reading in front of them is the best way to do it."

The novel tells the tale of the heroine Hazel, who travels to her Aunt's country house for a holiday and discovers there are nightmares living in the garden.

The novelist is now working on his second novel.

After the reading there was a question and answer session and then many students bought a copy of the book and had it signed by the author.

Alex Rayner said: "He has inspired me to write myself. I really enjoyed the reading as it was humorous and a lot of fun."

Corey York, brought a book and had it signed.

He said: "I am going to keep this in good condition as it could be worth a lot of money in the future."

CBA Librarian Amy McKay would like to thank his publishers Quercus and Waterstones for organising the event.
