Over a million people work in administration roles in the public services sector. A secretary or administrator provides both clerical and administrative support to professionals either as part of a team or individually.

The role puts you in a position of responsibility which requires you to stay organised and focused. You’ll be involved with the coordinator and implementation of office procedures and will frequently have responsibility for specific projects and tasks. You may also oversee and supervise the work of junior staff or you could end up as an office manager or team secretary, coordinating the work of others within a department or organisation.

As secretarial and administrative work is so diverse, employment can be found in virtually all sectors, including academic institutions, the creative industries, government, hospitals and general medical practices, legal and financial services, management and strategic consulting, marketing and communications, private companies, property, public organisations, including local authorities and charities and retail and leisure companies.

You may wish to specialise in one industry or area, such as legal or medical secretarial work, or become a personal assistant to a company director or other senior manager.

Jobs in the media, not-for-profit sectors and small organisations are at the lower end of the pay scale. Employment in banking, finance, property and law firms tend to be at the upper end.

The creative industries are all around us. They can be seen in the clothes we wear, the buildings we live and work in, the music we listen to, the books we read, the adverts on our screens, the apps we use and in countless other places. When you take a good look, the creative industries show up everywhere in our daily lives and the world would be a very different place without them!

For a more formal definition, the governments Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) first defined the creative industries as,

‘those activities which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.’

The creative industries include:

  • Music, performing arts, like acting, and visual arts, like painting
  • Crafts, such as weaving, furniture-making and jewellery-making
  • Film, TV, animation, visual effects, video, radio and photography
  • Video games, virtual reality, and extended reality
  • Museums, galleries and heritage, such as stately homes and cathedrals
  • Publishing and libraries
  • Design, including product design, graphic design and fashion
  • Architecture
  • Advertising and marketing

There are all kinds of jobs within the industries, from weaving and acting through to data analysis and network programming. There's a need for scientists, artists, people with business skills and those who combine all three.
