Re: Functional Skills

Dear Parent/Carer

As part of the English curriculum, students in Years 9-11 are preparing for a series of Functional Skills assessments in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  This is part of a national initiative to develop students’ skills for their life after school in the home and in the workplace.  Students are prepared for these assessments during English lessons and they have had access to a variety of resources to develop the skills required.  Students can achieve a Level 1 or Level 2 pass.  If a student is unsuccessful in an assessment then they will have the opportunity to re-sit.

Parents and carers can support their children by encouraging them to read newspapers, magazines, brochures, forms, in fact any reading material that is non-fiction.

Students have already begun to take these assessments and the Academy is delighted at the success rate so far.  We look forward to more and more students being successful in the future.

Yours sincerely
