About 50 Year 7 Textiles students have been challenged to take on a classic project with a new twist this year.

In previous years our students were asked to make monsters that required them to use a variety of design and textiles skills.

This term the students were asked to make Mexican Monsters, inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, to give them the opportunity to study another culture as part of their Key Stage 3 curriculum.

Textiles Teacher Abbie Parsons said: “We looked at the imagery and bright colours associated with the celebration and the students incorporated them into their designs.

“They used a variety of different techniques to make their monsters, including applique, hand embroidery and machine embroidery.

“Some of the students also chose to stay behind during Session 4 so they could enhance their creations by adding LEDs attached to conductive thread.

“They have all done really well and have produced high quality products considering this is the first time they have tackled a project like this.

“I’m very proud of them.”
