Reading Mentoring programme goes from strength to strength
Our new reading mentors have completed their first two terms with their Year 7 students.
Our new reading mentors have completed their first two terms with their Year 7 students.
At the beginning of the year 20 Year 12 students volunteered to become reading mentors to a group of Year 7 students.
The Sixth Formers meet with the younger students twice a week during Tutor Time to help the younger students improve their reading skills.
Librarian Amy McKay said: “At the beginning of the project we test the Year 7 students to find out what their reading ages are and then we test them again at the end to see if they have improved.
“Last year we had massive improvements with the students who had reading mentors. In one case a student’s reading age increased by 18 months.
“The mentors do brilliant work and it’s fantastic to see the relationships develop between the older and young students.
“It’s also a great experience for the Year 12 students because it gives them a sense of responsibility.”
All the Sixth Formers receive training for the role before they become reading mentors.
