Academy to host major foreign languages contest

Our Academy is preparing to host a prestigious foreign languages tournament for the fourth year in a row.

Our Academy is preparing to host a prestigious foreign languages tournament for the fourth year in a row.

We will welcome students from 44 schools from across the East Midlands to the regional final of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee.

Students will be tested on their knowledge of French, German and Spanish and our Academy has entered teams of Year 7 students into the French and Spanish competitions.

During the competition the students will be given one minute to spell out as many words in their chosen foreign language as they can.

The word will be read out to them in English, then the student will have to say the word in the foreign language and spell it in the foreign language, including any accents.

The Spelling Bee competition will be held on Wednesday 29th April.

Our Year 9 students will also compete in a Translation Bee competition for the East region in the summer.

They will take part in the French and Spanish sections of the competition and will have to translate words from English into their foreign languages in three different tenses.

CBA Modern Foreign Languages Director Karen Turney said: “Students must master translation skills to achieve the top grades at GCSE.

“So far 10 students have signed up to take part in this competition and they have been working very hard to prepare for it.”
