Our keen readers rubbed shoulders with award winning authors and illustrators at a special event to celebrate a prestigious book awards competition.
Thirteen CBA students were invited to attend the University of Northampton’s Library and Learning Services 2015 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway (CKG) Children’s Book Awards event.
They listened to talks from Heather Butler, whose book Us Minus Mum was long listed for this year’s Carnegie medal, and Kettering illustrator Dave Barrow, who won the Sebastian Walker Award for Most Promising Children’s illustrator and has recently signed a two book deal with Hodder Children’s Books.
The group was accompanied by CBA Librarian Amy McKay who also gave a talk at the event about the Carnegie medal in her capacity as CKG Co-ordinator.
She said: “Heather gave a very interesting talk about being a writer and how she writes and Dave spoke about the mechanics of building a picture book and his experience of being an illustrator.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet interesting people and explore the University Library’s great collection of books for children and young adults.
“We do all that we can to expose our students to different experiences and exciting people and to encourage them to read.
“Some of the girls we took are very keen on art so they were particularly excited to meet an award winning illustrator.”
The University staged the event for the second year in a row for its undergraduates and trainee teachers.
Our Academy was one of just two schools that were invited to take part in the event.
