Students use maths skills to plan rock concert

Our Year 7 students planned their own rock stadium concert as part of an exciting project designed to bring maths to life.

Our Year 7 students planned their own rock stadium concert as part of an exciting project designed to bring maths to life.

The students used data to decide which acts to invite and to create the most successful play list, they managed a budget, designed stage layouts and lighting and estimated quantities for catering.

The project, which is called Rock Club, is run by education charity The Transformation Trust with support from Nationwide.

Transformation Trust Mathematics Specialist Radhika Aggarwal said: “This project encourages the students to use their maths and problem solving skills in a practical scenario.

“I’ve been very impressed with the students here and they have shown themselves to be deep thinkers.

“As part of the project the students had to examine surveys, think about profit and loss and design and make models of their stage layouts and some of them were incredibly detailed.”

CBA Mathematics Teacher Yvonne Gyadu said: “This event promotes numeracy skills and shows students how they can apply their skills in real life scenarios outside the classroom.”

Year 7 student Cole Scorey said: “My favourite part was coming up with the ideas for the staging and the lighting.

“I’m really interested in things like that because I want to become an architect.”

Fellow Year 7 student Bernadette Philp said: “We had to use all the information to figure out what we would need to do to put on the concert.

“I really enjoyed it, especially making the models of the stage.”
