Celebrating Black History Month
Last term, Corby Business Academy proudly celebrated Black History Month with a series of assemblies designed and led by our talented student community and our 6th form student leaders. The assemblies, written by one of our Diversity Leads, Diana, were a resounding success, receiving high praise from both students and staff for their creativity, performance, message and confidence.
During the assemblies, students listened to stories of forgotten black heroes, such as Garret Morgan, the inventor of the gas mask used in WWI. Due to the racism of his time, shockingly, Morgan had to use a white actor to sell his products while he simply modelled them. These powerful stories highlighted the resilience and brilliance of black individuals throughout history.
The assemblies also featured students dressed in national outfits and performing African and black-inspired dances to traditional music, which had everyone eager to clap along. The assembly concluded with a competition for students to design a black-inspired superhero or an anti-racism poster and to remember that we all have a part to play in ensuring equal rights for all people.
In addition to the assemblies, Audrey designed a Black History quiz for students to enjoy during tutor time and CBA’s talented restaurant staff also joined the celebration by serving delicious dishes such as Nigerian spinach stew and piri piri chicken.
Worldviews teacher, Dr Rowe, said, ‘These inspiring events not only educated but also united our school community in celebrating the rich and diverse history of black individuals.
