Initiative launched to promote the use of sign language

Sign language symbols have begun to be displayed on electronic information boards across our Academy.

Sign language symbols have begun to be displayed on electronic information boards across our Academy.

The initiative has been launched this term to promote the use of sign language.

Students in Unit use Makaton signing which is beneficial for people for whom communication is difficult, in particular those with learning disabilities, and we have a student who uses British Sign Language.

Teacher Nikki Clark, who already provides sign language training for Unit’s support staff, came up with the idea for the displays.

She said: “Part of my role is to raise awareness of signing throughout the school so I’ve started selecting a couple of different signs to display on the boards every week.

“I hope it encourages more people to start using sign language.”
