A young mathematician has made it through to the third stage of a tough national competition.
Year 11 student Josh Champion (pictured) has successfully completed the second stage of the UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge 2014 for students in Years 9 to 11.
His score of 78 earned him a merit certificate and secured him a place in the next stage of the contest.
Assistant Director of Mathematics Maxwell Sam said: “I am really happy with all the students who took part in the competition.
“Josh has done incredibly well. We have never had any student get as far as he has in the competition before and we are very proud of him.
“This is a difficult competition because it tests for accuracy. There isn’t room for guesswork.
“Our competitors are inspiring other students too – especially those in Year 10. Everyone wants to take part in the maths challenge now.
“This is great news because it means going forward we will have more students entering competitions like this – it is a real success story.”
More than 20 of our students achieved gold, silver or bronze in the first round of the competition.
Josh was joined in the second stage of the competition by Year 10 students Owen Robinson and Benjamin Campbell who both just missed out on a place in the third round.
The competition is organized by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and supported by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
