Unit Curriculum Intent
The Academy’s Unit Provision will deliver a high quality, personalised and innovative curriculum that is aspirational in the attainment for all students, regardless of their starting points. Experiences will be rich in aspiration and allow students to make progress despite sometimes challenging circumstances. There will be a supportive and nurturing environment that fosters independence, develops confidence and instils resilience in all students.
Educational experiences will also celebrate individuality and provide opportunities to embed functional skills for lifelong learning. This will be coupled by a high focus on personal development, which enables students to gain cultural capital and contribute towards society as they move through the transitions ahead of them.
Curriculum Pathways
Students in the Unit follow a specific pathway. Each pathway is designed to be holistic in the development of the whole child; it covers academic lessons and accreditation, interventions linked to social interaction, communication, fine motor skills, self-help and independence. Our provision is underpinned by protective behaviours and zones of regulation supporting our student’s emotional resilience and wellbeing.

Cognition and Learning
Students with cognition and learning difficulties learn at a slower rate than others. Students usually find it more challenging to:
- acquire literacy and numeracy skills
- understand concepts
There are often additional difficulties for example:
- communication
- speech and language
- social skills
- sensory regulation
- concentration
- self-esteem

EHCP and Intervention
Unit students will access bespoke interventions and personalised targeted EHCP time daily. This time is aimed to provide students with a broad and balanced curriculum, ensuring they have multiple opportunities to progress and succeed on a daily basis.

In the Unit Provision class sizes are approximately 10 - 14 students with one teacher and at least one learning support assistant per group. The amount of learning support assistants per lesson is dependent on student need.
Students are grouped within their key stage:
KS3: Years 7 – 9
KS4: Years 10 – 11
KS5: Years 12 – 13
Each student is assigned a base teacher who is responsible for students in their class and is a parent’s first point of contact. Students are taught by the Unit team with some specialist teaching delivered by mainstream staff.
Lessons are highly differentiated enabling students to develop core-skills that are transferable into other subjects and aspects of their lives. Students extend their subject knowledge and have opportunities for over learning to ensure this knowledge is embedded and retained over time. Lessons are between 50 – 60 minutes in length.
We are aspirational in the attainment of our students and enable them to access accreditation and certification at an appropriate level in the subject areas they follow which helps prepare them for the next stage in their lives.

Key Stage 3
Students in KS3 follow a broad range of subjects where there is a strong focus on developing literacy and numeracy skills which are embedded across all subjects. The KS3 Curriculum enables students to develop and extend the skills learned at primary school preparing them for KS4 accreditation and life beyond.

Learning Journeys
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 students follow personalised accreditation that is focused on core subjects including English, Maths and ICT. The Vocational and Life Skills accreditation covers a range of subjects that are developmental and are of interest to the students for examples child development, art, hospitality, horticulture, pet care.
