Work Experience

Work related learning is a fundamental part of the ethos at Corby Business Academy. We look to broaden our students understanding of the world of work, further develop their employability skills and allow them to gain new experiences that will inspire them to aim high.

By participating in a work experience placement, students will expand their learning from the classroom into the work environment. At Corby Business Academy, students will embark on work experience during Years 10 and 12. Year 10 students will take part in World of Work week whilst Year 12 will take part in a week’s work experience placement.

We encourage students to gain as much as work experience outside of these scheduled events in areas linked to their future career interests. This can be through additional work experience placements, a part-time job or through volunteering. Work experience can really help a student to stand out whether it be on their college, university, apprenticeship or job application.

This year we will be holding a World of Work week for Year 10 students during the week commencing 3rd July 2023. As part of the event students will take part in a variety of workshops and talks based on pathway options, CVs and interviews.

Students will be able to select an industry of their choosing and participate in workshops led by local employers, colleges and apprenticeship providers to offer them an insight into different careers pathways. They will also take part in mock interviews.

We invite parents, carers local employers, apprenticeship providers, FE and HE providers to support this event. To find out more please email Corby Business Academy’s Careers Leader fern.gibson@corbybusinessacademy.org

We believe that it is also hugely beneficial for students to gain work experience in areas linked to their future careers.

This Year, Year 12 students at Corby Business Academy will partake in the Work Experience programme for one-week (5 days) between 15th - 21st July  2024. To allow our students to have the best possible experience, we will consider alternate dates during the school year if we believe a placement will be of particular benefit to the individual and this will need to be discussed with the school - as the Academy’s Careers Leader I will be the main individual supporting Year 12 with this.

Year 12 students have attended a launch assembly and follow-up sessions on how they can log their placements on the Unifrog platform as well as how to find and contact employers.

We have encouraged students to contact companies and organisations themselves or make use of existing contacts that they have. Where this isn’t possible or students are uncertain about what wish to do in future, students will be supported to find an alternative.

Any students that do not manage to find a placement will be required to attend school and take part in workshops provided by the Academy as well as support the Sixth Form Team with the new Year 12 transition days that will take part during w/c 15th July. The event will allow students to develop key transferable skills.

If you have any questions regarding work experience placement, please do not hesitate to contact Careers Leader Fern Gibson via emailing fern.gibson@corbybusinessacademy.org or call 01536 303120.

Whilst being incredibly insightful and beneficial to students, finding a work experience placement has become harder since the Covid-19 pandemic with now more staff also working from home. If you or your company can assist with a placement for one of our Sixth Form students please let me know at your earliest convenience.
