A group of students studying Music at the Academy took a trip to London to visit the Trinity London Conservatoire and attend the National Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

On Tuesday 11th November, 30 students ranging from Year 9 – 13 visited Trinity Laban Conservatoire where they got a taste for what studying music in the city could be like. Students toured the facilities and sat in on lessons and performances. Students then had the opportunity to hear from both students and lecturers at the conservatoire and ask them any questions they had. Students asked questions a range of questions regarding information about accommodation, courses and career aspirations.

Students then headed to the Royal Albert Hall via Greenwich Park where they had the opportunity to see the city skyline from one of the best viewpoints.

At the Royal Albert Hall, students attended the annual Music for Youth Proms which showcases diverse musical performances from young musicians from across the UK. Over 1000 amazing young musicians perform over the event on the iconic stage including ensembles, bands, and choirs who performed orchestral classics, traditional folk and roots, big band jazz and more.

This year’s Music for Youth Proms featured the world premiere of a special new commissioned piece by composer Aileen Sweeney with lyrics by poet Iona Lee, inspired by the folklore legend of the Giant’s Causeway.  The commission focused on the powerful and timely theme of building bridges and was performed by a 450-strong children's choir and full orchestra.

Director of Music, Mr Wears said: “It is a pleasure to be able to take our music students on this trip to visit the Trinity London Conservatoire and the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. The day provides an opportunity for students to get a taster of what a future studying music in a big city could be like as well as the types of exquisite venues they could perform at in their futures. Hearing music produced and performed from the vast variety of musicians and genres is truly inspirational for our students to witness and become inspired by. A long but great day was had by all.”
