In Year 10, students begin by developing their understanding of the four key media concepts – media language, representation, audience, and industry – through the close study of media texts required for Component 1 of the Eduqas GCSE specification. They explore a range of media forms including film posters, magazines, newspapers, websites, video games, and radio, with regular practice in analysing how meaning is constructed and how audiences are targeted. Alongside this, students are introduced to key media theorists and practise extended writing using PEAL paragraph structures. In the summer term, focus shifts to Component 3, where students respond to an NEA brief by researching, planning, and producing an original media product (such as a magazine or film promotion material), applying their knowledge of media language and representation. They also complete an evaluative statement using appropriate terminology. By the end of the year, students will have a strong foundation in both analytical and creative aspects of the course, with Component 3 coursework completed and internally assessed.

Year 11 marks the final stretch of the GCSE Media Studies course, where students build on the knowledge and practical skills gained in Year 10. The focus shifts firmly towards exam preparation, with in-depth exploration of set texts, extended analysis of media forms, and the development of confident exam technique. This is the year where theory meets application – and students begin to think more critically about the media they consume and create.
