Knowledge acquisition in AQA GCSE Psychology is carefully structured to ensure pupils develop a deep understanding of psychological concepts, approaches, and research methods. Pupils acquire knowledge through explicit teaching, guided discussion, and the analysis of case studies and experiments, which promotes active engagement and deeper comprehension. Core skills such as evaluation, application, and analysis are explicitly taught and practised across all topics, building on prior knowledge from earlier units and KS3 foundation content. Vocabulary development is embedded throughout the curriculum using Frayer models; psychological terminology is introduced in context, explicitly taught, and reinforced through retrieval practice, low stakes assessments, and regular opportunities for verbal and written application. This deliberate sequencing supports long-term memory and enables pupils to confidently use subject-specific language when articulating complex ideas. Comprehension is developed through structured reading, questioning, and scaffolded writing tasks that require pupils to interpret and evaluate psychological evidence. Through repeated exposure to key concepts and skills, and opportunities for critical thinking, pupils become increasingly expert in their understanding of human behaviour and mental processes. Assessment is used formatively to identify gaps in understanding and misconceptions and monitor attainment and progress, informing future teaching and targeted support.
